Building Block Groups

In order to support a healthy, vibrant economy and increase the purchasing of local and sustainable goods, we need to understand the sectors or ‘Building Blocks’ that make up the local economy. By identifying the building blocks, we can create a holistic vision of a local living economy. SBNP develops programs and events around these various Building Block Sectors and we encourage our members to self-organize around their particular interests and passion.

Rather than duplicating the work of many other organizations in Portland, we encourage our members to seek out and support existing programs and resources already thriving in specific Building Block sectors such as Green Building ( The City Repair Project) and Food Systems (Ecotrust).  The Building Blocks we are creating programs and events around include:

Economic Sustainability --strengthening the health of our region by supporting business stewardship of our local community, environment, workplaces and local economy.
Shop Locally Owned Initiative--increasing awareness about the personal, community, and economic benefits of choosing local, independently owned businesses whenever possible.
Sustainable Business Practices—educating local independently owned businesses about best practices through a Strategies for Success series of forums and Visionary Luncheons and promoting the adoption of business practices that strengthen community, maintain a healthy environment and create equity in the workplace.

Local Food Systems—preserving the viability of local agriculture and increasing the share of local agriculture that is organic and sustainably grown.  Getting local restaurants and businesses to source more food products from local farms.

Transportation/Alternative Fuel—encouraging the use of alternative forms of transportation, including walking, biking and riding public transportation as well as promoting the adoption of and investment in technologies that utilize sustainable energy practices such as bio-diesel, renewable energy, bicycles, public transit.

Health and Wellness— promoting and connecting the vast network of alternative health  professionals and  resources available to employers and individuals in the Portland metro area.

Green Building/Sustainable Design--promoting the design, construction and operation of buildings and the creation and maintenance of landscapes in the Portland metro area that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live, work and play.

Independent Media and Bookstores-encouraging individuals to educate themselves with indpendent, non-corporate sources of information like community radio, independent community/alternative newspapers, locally owned independent community bookstores and websites and for businesses to financially support these efforts with advertising dollars and other support.

Culture  and Community—encouraging local businesses and individuals to support the arts as a vital component that enhances the quality of life in our region, helps build community and connects the diverse networks of artists in various genres to one another and the broader community as a whole.

To get involved in one of these areas, please contact Robyn Shanti, SBNP coordinator at 503 232-2943
